The coronavirus situation in Delhi is not that bleak, at least this is what the impression one gets looking at the recovery rate. Delhi Health Minister Satyendar Jain on Thursday said there were 2,248 coronavirus patients in the national capital and 32 per cent of these have recovered from the infection. “So far, 2,248 positive cases have been found in Delhi and out of these, 724 or 32 per cent have recovered,” said Jain.
According to the Health Minister there are three levels of coronavirus care in the city – those having no symptoms, mild symptoms or critical patients. “There are three levels of Covid centres — Covid care centre (CCC), dedicated health centre and third is dedicated hospitals. Those having mild symptoms or were asymptomatic are taken to the CCC,” he said.
Jain said those with moderate symptoms are kept in the dedicated health centre while those who are severely sick are taken to the dedicated hospitals.”If everyone is taken to the hospitals, then how will we take care of the serious cases,” he said on the need of three levels. So far, Delhi has reported 48 deaths.
Meanwhile, the Punjab government has ordered audit of every Covid-19 death to understand and check the high mortality rate in the state. The government was strengthening pandemic containment measures under the guidance of an expert team, the Chief Minister said, here on Thursday.
The expert group comprises K.K. Talwar, former Director of the PGI Hospital; Raj Bahadur, Vice-Chancellor of State Health University; Rajesh Kumar, former head of the School of Public Health, PGI; as well as experts from the PGI and the John Hopkins University.
On high mortality rate in the state, he said it was due to co-morbidity and lack of health-seeking behaviour (patients come late to hospital).
Despite the high 6.2 per cent mortality rate, the growth rate of Covid-19 in the Punjab was lower than India, with the cases doubling in 16 days against the national average of 9 days.
In percentage terms, cases in Punjab had steadily declined from 2.57 per cent of the total cases in India as of March 31 to 1.22 per cent in three weeks till April 22, revealing effective containment in the state, he said.
