In a major setback to CPM led Government, Kerala High Court today quashed the charge sheet prepared by Crime Branch and asked the central agency to probe into the twin murder case in which CPM leaders are involved. Questioning the credibility of the investigation, the court said that police preferred the words of the accused rather than of the witnesses.
It was on the evening of February 17 that the two Youth Congress activists, Kripesh and Sarath Lal were hacked to death at Kalliyot of northern Kerala. The clear case of political killing, Kerala police, since the beginning of the investigation was trying to challenge the course of the investigation to personal vengeance.
The police had questioned local MLA K Kunhiraman, former MLA K V Kunhiraman and CPM’s district secretariat member V P P Mustafa who were given with clean chit in the incident. Two CPM leaders were arrested later by the Crime Branch, however, was later released on bail. They had been charged with harbouring the offender and destroying evidence.
The Crime Branch later informed the High Court that there was no evidence of CPM top leaders in the Periya double murder case. Responding to the request filed by the family members of the slain youth congress activists, Crime Branch DySP had given the explanation that the investigating agency had no politics and showed no favour to the CPM.
