Following the call of Prime Minister Narendra Modi to scrap such plastics by 2022, a complete ban on the use of polythene bags will come into force in Uttar Pradesh from tomorrow. Local police station and its in-charge will be held responsible for non-compliance of the government order in this regard.
Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath had vowed last year to make Uttar Pradesh plastic and polythene-free. Allahabad High Court had earlier banned the use of polythene in the state. Government has said that alternative things will be made available to the people.
In 1998, Sikkim was the first state to ban plastic bags. It is also the first state to target single use plastic bottles which were banned in 2016. However earlier this month, while addressing the nation on the independence day, PM Modi urged the nation to completely abandon the use of single use plastics.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who is leading efforts to scrap plastics by 2022, is set to launch the campaign with a ban on as many as six items on Oct. 2, the birth anniversary of independence leader Mahatma Gandhi, official sources reveal.
As per reports, articles include plastic bags, cups, plates, small bottles, straws and certain types of sachets are to be banned across the country.
