The Sri Krishna Temple in Bahrain is an iconic temple that speaks much about the relationship with India and the tiny Island country in gulf. Though the former prime ministers managed to conveniently forget this key Gulf nation, Narendra Modi who believes in ‘neighbours first’ policy visited the country opening a new chapter in the diplomatic relationship between two countries.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi also launched a $4.2 million redevelopment project of the 200-year-old Lord Sri Krishna temple in Manama and said it manifests the strong ties between India and Bahrain. He offered prayers at the Shreenathji Temple in Manama, the oldest temple in the region, and also the ‘prasad’ that he bought with the RuPay card after launching it in the UAE on Saturday.

The Shri Krishna Temple is built on a 45,000 sq land where the new three-storey building will be constructed. The new space will hold 80 per cent more capacity to host devotees. Established in Bahrain’s capital Manama, the Shreenathji (Shri Krishna) temple is set to have a special facility for the priests and another one to host Hindu weddings. This addition comes to light after the Bahrain Tourism and Exhibition Authority initiated to make the Kingdom a hub for many Hindu weddings.
“The establishment of the Hindu temple more than two hundred years ago in Manama, as the oldest in the region, is a clear testament to the depth of the ties that link us together, and the civilised qualities of peaceful co-existence and freedom of belief and religion that have characterized Bahrain throughout its history, the official Bahrain News Agency quoted the King of Bahrain Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa.
The facelift for the Shreenathji (Shree Krishna) temple in Manama will kick off later this year. As per reports, the $4.2 million redevelopment project will be on a piece of land measuring 16,500 square feet and the new four-floor structure covering 45,000 square feet will have an overall height of 30 meters.
