The crisis in the Karnataka coalition government is deepening after the resignation of Congress lawmakers from the Assembly. Hectic parleys are underway in the Congress to find a solution to the crisis.
Meanwhile, on Monday, all the Congress ministers in the Karnataka Cabinet submitted their resignations to party’s legislative leader Siddaramaiah. According to a senior Congress leader, this is being done to save the 13-month-old Congress-JD(S) coalition government from collapsing.
Talking to Indus Scrolls, Congress party in-charge for the state, KC Venugopal said, “All our 22 ministers have given their resignation letters to Siddaramaiah to make way for the rebel legislators and save the coalition government.” The Congress had made an offer to rebels to include them in the Cabinet. A series of meetings are underway in Bengaluru to salvage the government.
The 34-member ministry has 22 Congress ministers, 10 from Janata Dal-Secular (JD-S) 10 and one each from Karnataka Pragnyavantha Janatha Party (KPJP) and Independent.
So far ten Congress lawmakers have resigned from Assembly while three JD(S) members have submitted their resignations, posing a existential threat to the government. However, Speaker KR Ramesh Kumar is yet to take a call on the resignations.
But sources in the Congress told Indus Scrolls that the efforts to save the government is set to fail, as more members are likely to resign in the days to come.
On Monday, Small-Scale Industries Minister Nagesh also submitted his resignation Governor Vajubhai Vala at the Raj Bhavan. He belongs to Scheduled Caste.
