Several people reported to have died in shootings in two mosques in Christchurch, New Zealand, after a shooter opened fire at people on Friday morning. According to a report police confirmed “multiple fatalities” in the shootings.
New Zealand Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern has described the attack as an “unprecedented act of violence.” The Prime Minister has warned Muslims to not attend mosques.
According to a CNN report, the Bangladesh cricket team, which was going to one of the two targeted mosques, was almost caught up in the firing. Reports from other sources say the team members are safe. A video posted to Twitter by Mohammad Islam, a Bangladeshi journalist, shows Bangladesh cricketers scrambling back from the mosque. Islam’s tweet reads: “Bangladesh team escaped from a mosque near Hagley Park where there were active shooters. They ran back through Hagley Park back to the Oval. “
Of the New Zealand population of 50 lakh, Muslims constitute about 1 per cent which works out to about 50,000 in 2013. But Muslims are the fastest growing population in the country.
