Yesterday, the US military shot down a Chinese surveillance balloon that entered US airspace. The balloon was spotted on the South Carolina coast and was shot down by military jets at midnight Indian time, causing it to crash into the Atlantic Ocean with a small explosion.
Prior to the incident, three airports and airstrips were closed by the US. Although initially hesitant to shoot the balloon down due to potential danger, President Biden ultimately gave the order.
The US is now sending ships to retrieve the remains of the balloon, which it alleges was being used for espionage. China claims the balloon was only being used for weather observation and went off course, expressing regret over the situation.
Meanwhile, the Pentagon announced that another Chinese surveillance balloon was spotted in Latin America but did not specify where. There have been reports that it was seen in Costa Rica and Venezuela, but China has not commented on this second balloon.
