The owner of the flat from where a woman fell to death while trying to escape earlier this month was arrested by the police. Imthiaz Ahammad, owner of the flat, appeared before Ernakulam Central Police as directed by the court. The police recorded his arrest and released him on bail.
The woman, a Tamil Nadu native who was working as servant in the flat, succumbed to her injuries after falling from the 6th floor of the flat in Kochi. The deceased is identified as Kumari (50). The incident took place on December 5.
According to reports, she met with the freak accident while trying to climb down from the flat by tying sarees together. She fell into the roof of the car porch and suffered a severe head injury.
She breathed her last on December 12 while undergoing treatment at a hospital here.
In the initial phase, the police refused to register a case against the flat owner. As the incident triggered a controversy, the police booked him. Amidst this, the accused moved to a hide-out and took anticipatory bail.
Kumari’s husband who reached Kochi revealed that some people close to the flat owner tried to influence him for settling the case. They also offered money to him.
Following this, state women’s commission chairperson MC Josephine intervened and the police booked the accused under various charges including wrongful confinement and human trafficking.
