Karnataka Governor Thaawarchand Gehlot on Tuesday gave his assent to the Karnataka government’s ordinance on the Anti-Conversion Bill.
The bill is officially known as the Karnataka Protection of Right to Freedom of Religion Bill-2021. With this Karnataka has become the 9th Indian state to implement the anti-conversion law.
The nod from the Governor was received five days after the state Cabinet led-by Chief Minister Basavaraj Bommai approved the anti-conversion ordinance.
The ordinance route was opted for as the state assembly and Council are not in session. However, the ordinance has to be passed by both houses within 6 months once the state legislature convenes.
The bill has provisions for preventing conversion or attempt to conversion from one religion to another by use or practice of misrepresentation, force, undue influence, coercion, allurement or by a promise of marriage.
It prescribes punishments, including a jail term, for anyone who is found guilty of conversion or attempt to conversion.
