Facing financial crunch, Vattamkulam Kalanjadi Abhaya Narasimhamoorthi Temple in Malappuram’s Edappal has resorted to ‘payasam’ challenge. Lack of income from offerings and treasury due to closure of temples during the lockdown period, has forced the temple committee to experiment with this new method of selling ‘payasam’.
The temple which is reeling in crisis due to the first wave of COVID, has to raise more than Rs 50,000 per month even to meet the salary expenses of head priest, priest, temple assistant and office staff. Besides, other running costs are also to be met.
Interestingly, ‘payasam’ challenge has brought some temporary relief to the temple committee. Though the cost of preparing 800 litres ‘payasam’ was around Rs 1,00,000, the committee has been successful in selling at Rs 200 per litre. Board president and culinary expert K V Rajan and office-bearers Manesh, Sandeep and Ranjith supervised the initiative.
