Anger is brewing over the Tamil Nadu Police bid to save the authorities of a Christian management-run school who tried to forcefully convert a Hindu teenage girl to Christianity which led the hapless girl to end her life. The authorities mentally tortured her and subjected to humiliation after she refused to change her religion.
Meanwhile, the police have filed a case against an unidentified person for recording the statement of the victim, M Lavanya. In the dying declaration, Lavanya says a teacher at Sacred Heart Higher Secondary School in Thirukattupalli near Thanjavur used to mount pressure on her to convert.
According to parents. Lavanya had committed suicide by consuming poison after the school mounted pressure to convert to Christianity to continue her studies. The 12th standard student has been living at the St. Michael’s Girls Hostel near her school for the past five years after her mother died eight years ago. The Sacred Heart Higher Secondary School is a government-aided Christian school.
Meanwhile, the rights group, Legal Rights Protection Forum (LRPF) has filed a complaint with the Union Ministry of Home Affairs to take disciplinary action against Ravali Priya IPS, Superintendent of Police of Thanjavur District, for allegedly trying to mislead the investigation. Several senior IPS officers and State BJP president M Annamali have also come down heavily on her for summarily rejecting the facts. In a bid to protect the culprits, Ravali Priya IPS had organized a press meet on 20 January 2022 and uninvitedly announced that there was no religious conversion angle in the case.
In the wake of public outrage, the police are mulling to include the nun whose name was mentioned by the girl in the investigation.
