Controversial Kerala politician PC George has stirred up a hornet’s nest after he made a derogatory caste remark against a Catholic priest, calling him “a scumbag and illegitimate son of a Pulaya maidservant”. However, George did not mention the name of the priest.
The MLA was responding to a question by mediapersons on the recent strife in the Catholic Church which saw two groups – one favouring Cardinal George Alancerry and the rival faction – engaged in a no-holds-barred war that has the potential to split the powerful Church.
“There is no division in the Catholic Church. He was born to a Pulaya woman. No Catholic worth his salt will ever listen to people like him,” said George.
Betraying his deep-rooted caste prejudice, George further said: “It’s a matter of shame that he is called a Catholic. There are many scumbag priests like him in Ernakulum-Angamaly Dioceses. The particular priest has a reputed family name attached to his name. I enquired about it and found that he was the son of a Pulaya maidservant of the family. In olden times, care was taken in the appointment of priests. Facing shortage of priests, the Church started appointing all kinds of scumbags.”
Upset over the remarks, the Hindu Pulaya Maha Sabha in a statement said it would take legal action against the controversial MLA. KPMS president Neelakandan Master said, “PC George is a vainglorious lout and loose cannon. He doesn’t know about the history or heritage of the Pulaya community.”
