RRR, the blockbuster Indian film directed by SS Rajamouli and starring Ram Charan and Jr NTR, has taken home the Oscar for Best Original Song at the 95th Academy Awards. The song, Naatu Naatu, composed by MM Keeravaani and written by Chandrabose, beat out a strong field of contenders, including Lady Gaga’s Hold My Hand from Top Gun: Maverick and Rihanna’s Lift Me Up from Black Panther: Wakanda Forever.
Naatu Naatu’s victory at the Oscars comes as no surprise to fans of the film, as the song has become a viral sensation around the world. It was also named Best Original Song at the Golden Globe Awards in January, cementing its place as one of the year’s most popular and critically acclaimed tracks.
Composer MM Keeravaani and lyricist Chandrabose accepted the award, delivering an emotional acceptance speech and performing a version of The Carpenters’ hit Top Of The World. The entire RRR team was present at the ceremony, with stars Ram Charan and Jr NTR cheering on their colleagues from the audience.
Naatu Naatu’s performance at the Oscars was one of the highlights of the night, with singers Rahul Sipligunj and Kaala Bhairava delivering a powerful rendition of the song while dancer Lauren Gottlieb wowed the crowd with her choreography. Indian actress Deepika Padukone, who was also in attendance as a presenter, introduced the performance and expressed her admiration for the RRR team.
This is the second win for an Indian film at this year’s Oscars, with The Elephant Whisperers taking home the award for Best Documentary Short Subject. All That Breathes was also nominated for Best Documentary Feature Film, but the award went to Navalny.
