The spate of resignation of senior leaders continue in Congress. The latest to submit the resignation is West Bengal Congress chief Somen Mitra. Taking responsibility for the party’s poor show in the Lok Sabha election he submitted his resignation to the All India Congress Committee (AICC).
Rahul Gandhi’s resignation from the party chief’s post triggered a series of resignations with all senior leaders putting in their papers. There are rumours that Priyanka Vadra might also put in her papers.
According to Congress sources and media reports, Gaurav Gogoi, the in-charge of party affairs in Bengal, refused to accept Mitra’s resignation and requested him to continue in the post.
The Congress could win only two seats this time out of the 42 Lok Sabha seats in Bengal. In 2014 elections, it had won four seats.
“…after Rahul Gandhi resigned from his post last week, Mitra too sent his resignation to AICC on Sunday,” the press statement said.
