Prime Minister Narendra Modi filed his nomination papers before the District Magistrate of Varanasi who took half-an-hour time to meticulously go through the documents.
This is the second time that he is filing nominations from this seat. Among those who proposed PM Modi’s nomination papers were the woman principal of Panini College and a “dom raja” who helps cremate bodies.
Senior National Democratic Alliance leaders Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar, Shiromani Akali Dal leader Parkash Singh Badal, Shiv Sena chief Uddhav Thackeray, AIADMK leaders O Panneerselvam and M Thambidurai, Anupriya Patel and BJP leaders like Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, Union Ministers Rajnath Singh, Sushma Swaraj and Nitin Gadkari were also present at the collectorate where Modi filed his nomination papers.
Earlier addressing a gathering of party workers after he visited Kal Bhairav temple, PM Modi said since Independence, it is for the first time that there is a “pro-incumbency” wave in the country. He promised to return to thank Kashinivasiyon after the election.
In the speech, he spoke about the sacrifices of BJP workers in Kerala and West Bengal where they are being targeted by their political rivals.
Talking to mediapersons, he said he was indebted to the local people for giving him a huge reception in the sweltering heat of the summer. People waved at the convoy from balconies, rooftops and the roadside, showering rose petals on his vehicle.
Modi told people that they should not become complacent in the hope that “Modi will win” and vote in large numbers.
Local BJP leaders said Modi’s victory margin will go up considerably that all candidates against him will forfeit their deposits. Amit Kumar, a college student, said the BJP is set to sweep the entire region as the opposition campaign has lost its momentum. The SP-BSP combine will not be able to resist the BJP juggernaut.
