The Karnataka Police have arrested two goons – Sarfuddin, 31, and Muhammad Irfan, 24, — from Puttur town for mounting a murderous attack on Hindu fish vendors on December 6. According to the polce murder charges have been slapped on the attackers.
According to the police, Sarfuddin, a resident of Kuppetti Baitaru Mane in Thannirupantha village of Beltangady, and Irfan belonging to Kolpe Kolambe Mane of Konalu village in Kadaba taluk, attacked Ashok alias Anil Kumar, his elder brother Mohandas and customer Mahesh with machetes and swords. The attackers are activists of the Popular Front of India, which is behind many such attacks in this communally sensitive part of the state.

Recently, the Vishwa Hindu Parishad had urged the Karnataka government to ban PFI, after their members attacked policemen at Uppinangady in Dakshina Kannada district. In the attack, nine cops and several PFI activists were injured during the PFI protest at Puttur taluk. The protesters were demanding the release of PFI leaders who were detained at the Uppinangady police station in connection with an assault case registered on December 7.
