In a chilling revelation, the United States State Department’s 2022 International Religious Freedom Report has shed light on the extreme persecution faced by Christians in North Korea. According to the report, individuals caught with Bibles in the repressive regime are being sentenced to death, while their family members, including innocent children, are handed life imprisonment.
The report discloses that a staggering number of 70,000 Christians are currently imprisoned in North Korea under the regime of Kim Jong Un. Shockingly, people of other religious beliefs are also targeted and incarcerated. Even more distressing is the reported case of a two-year-old child who suffered the same fate as their parents after a Bible was found in their possession.
The State Department report further reveals the horrifying conditions endured by imprisoned Christians, who are subjected to various forms of physical torture. Citing information from North Korea’s organization ‘Korea Future,’ the report highlights the government’s relentless persecution of individuals engaged in religious practices, possession of religious objects, or any form of contact with religion.
Among the grave human rights violations listed are arbitrary arrests, prolonged detentions, forced labor, physical abuse, denial of a fair trial, deportation, and sexual assault. The North Korean regime has unleashed a wave of repression aimed at suppressing any form of religious expression, leaving countless lives shattered.
A previous report by Korea Future in December 2021 provided further insight into the ordeal faced by Christian women in North Korea due to their religious beliefs. The study, based on interviews with 151 women, exposed a disturbing pattern of violence perpetrated against them. The women described incidents of detention, physical torture, deportation, forced labor, and sexual assault as the brutal consequences of their religious affiliation.
These shocking revelations highlight the urgent need for the international community to address the dire human rights situation in North Korea. The State Department report serves as a stark reminder of the widespread oppression and suffering endured by individuals merely seeking to practice their faith.
The United States and other concerned nations are called upon to raise awareness, apply diplomatic pressure, and take decisive action to end the horrific persecution faced by Christians and other religious minorities in North Korea. The lives and fundamental freedoms of thousands hang in the balance, demanding immediate attention and intervention from the global community.
