No Public Participation: SC gives nod for Puri Rath Yatra with restriction

The Supreme Court of India on Monday has granted permission to conduct Rath Yatra in Puri, Odisha however with restrictions.

The SC said that the yatra will be held with coordination of Temple committee, State and central Govt without compromising with health issue.

The top court also said that Odisha can even stop the yatra or festivities if the situation seems to go out of control. SC says it can’t “micro-manage” Lord Jagannath’s Rath Yatra in Puri, will leave it to wisdom of state, Centre and temple management.

The Rath Yatra of Puri will be taken out tomorrow. The Odisha govenrment told SC it will coordinate with temple management & Centre to make things smooth during Rath Yatra.

SC also said that it is considering issue of conducting Rath Yatra in Puri only, not at other places in Odisha.

The Rath Yatra of Puri involves the mass procession with a chariot with deities Jagannath (Lord Vishnu), Balabhadra (Balaram) and Subhadra (their sister) and Sudarshana Chakra (his weapon) on a ratha, a wooden deula-shaped chariot. It attracts over a million Hindu pilgrims who join the procession each year.
