Controversy has arisen surrounding the fundraising efforts for the upcoming ‘Loka Kerala Sabha’ regional meeting in the United States, which is set to be attended by Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan. The controversy revolves around the introduction of high-priced passes that grant exclusive privileges to attendees, including the opportunity to have dinner with the Chief Minister and a seat beside him on the stage.
The organizers of the ‘Loka Kerala Sabha’ meeting had devised a tiered pass system, offering Gold, Silver, and Bronze Passes to interested individuals. The Gold Pass, priced at a staggering Rs. 82 lakhs, promised several benefits, while the Silver Pass offered a chance to dine with the Chief Minister and occupy a prominent seat on the stage. However, it has been reported that no one has yet availed themselves of these passes.
The organizers had envisioned the ‘Loka Kerala Sabha’ meeting as a high-profile event, resembling a star-studded celebrity show. The tariff card for attendees featured images of the luxurious Marriot Marquis hotel in New York, the chosen venue for the event, along with details of the exclusive facilities and perks available to pass holders. Sponsors who purchased the Gold Pass were promised an exclusive dinner with the Chief Minister, as well as a prominent place on stage, among other privileges.
This tariff card has been widely circulated among the Malayalee community residing in the United States, aiming to attract potential attendees and sponsors. However, the response has been far from what was expected. As of now, no Gold or Silver Passes have been sold, with a total collection of only $280,000 reported.
Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan and his team are scheduled to depart for the United States on the evening of the 7th. The ‘Loka Kerala Sabha’ meeting is planned for the 9th, 10th, and 11th of this month. Following the gathering, the Chief Minister will proceed to Cuba, concluding his visit to the United States before returning to Kerala.
