Akanksha Kumar, journalist with pro-Islamist propaganda outlet Newslaundry, was in touch with fugitive Islamic terror suspect Kamal KP who carried a reward of Rs 25,000, according to officials of the UP Special Task Force (STF) probing the Hathras conspiracy. Kamal, who funded dubious journalist Siddique Kappan, is accused of plotting social unrest in the wake of the rape-death of a 19-year-old woman from the Dalit community in 2020. The PFI along with some radical outfits was planning a Nirbhaya-like protests in UP. In an interview to the Left propaganda portal, Kappan had unwittingly told the interviewer that the Hathras incident had the potential of becoming a national issue akin to the Nirbhaya incident.
According to STF officials, Kamal KP, mentor of Kappan, was tasked with the coordination of the Hathras agitation. Kamal and Kappan were in regular touch. Kamal was the marketing manager of PFI mouthpiece Thejas. Through Kappan, he had built good rapport with the mediamen in the National Capital. He has managed to plant stories in national media outlets, including Newslaundry, whitewashing Kappan’s crime. All these media operations were bankrolled by the Islamist outfit.
Meanwhile, it’s learnt that there are not many takers for Kappan now among the media fraternity. Although some Leftist journalists were planning to organize a reception for Kappan at the Press Club, the plan had to be shelved due to protest from a section of journalist. Later, Kerala Union of Working Journalists also planned a reception. It also did not take place owing to protest.
