The Covid virus continues to ravage across the world even after two years into its outbreak. Millions of people got infected while millions lost their lives. The emergence of variants such as Delta and Omicron had raised fear. Apart from these, a new variant namely Neokov has now raised the concern of the world nations.
Neokov was discovered in a colony of bats in South Africa by Wuhan scientists. Studies suggest that this variant has so far been seen spreading only in animals and it cannot infect humans. But experts fear the possibility of the virus entering human bodies once it mutates. The World Health Organisation (WHO) has said that more clarity is needed on its capability. More studies are required to find out whether Neokov can infect human beings.
Meanwhile, scientists from Wuhan University in China have said that Neokov can enter human cells just like SARS-CoV-2. Neokov virus belongs to the family of Middle East Respiratory Syndrome (MERS-Cov).
