National Commission for Minorities on Friday sought a report from Kerala Chief Secretary and state police chief on ‘custodial murder’ of a Christian youth in Idukki district on June 21. The Commission sought the report on the direction of its Vice-Chairman George Kurian.
“The police who are expected to ensure rule of law and protect and safeguard the life and property of people are indulging in savage murders. This is not acceptable,” stated Kurian.
The victim, Rajkumar, was illegally detained and tortured at Nedumkandam police station in an alleged loan fraud case. The victim’s relatives said the case was fabricated, as someone close to the ruling CPI(M) was involved in the case.
According to the relatives, Rajkumar was illegally detained by the police and after three days of continuous torture he was produced before the magistrate. Rajkumar’s relatives said the victim died due to internal injuries sustained in custodial torture.
