A Muslim bridegroom and the family members of the bride were booked for hurting the sentiments of Hindus in the communally sensitive Bantwal at the Tulunad area of Dakshina Kannada. The incident happened on January 6.
The police filed the case on the basis of a complainant filed by Chethan, a resident of Vitlapadnur village. According to the complaint, the accused Umarulla Bashith, a native of Uppala in Kerala, donned the attire of local Hindu deity Koragajja and allegedly behaved indecently along with others during his wedding. The incident occurred at Salethur in Kolnadu village in Bantwal, the police said.
“The accused also tried to disrupt peace in the society by making the video public. This incident has hurt the religious sentiments of Hindus,” said Chethan demanding legal action against the bride’s family, the groom and his friends.
The accused believed to be SDPI sympathiser has been booked along with others under 295A (Deliberate and malicious acts, intended to outrage religious feelings of any class by insulting its religion or religious beliefs) and 153A (promoting disharmony, enmity or feelings of hatred on grounds of religion) of the IPC.
Bajrang Dal and Vishwa Hindu Parishad activists took out a protest against the accused at the bride’s house. The police rushed to site and detained them.
Former city mayor and Dakshina Kannada Muslim Federation president K Ashraf also condemned the actions of the accused. He said such actions by some individuals are vitiating the communal atmosphere.
