The Congress unit in Kerala has tendered unconditional apology to the Christians for hurting their sentiments through one of its tweets. In a bid to mock Pope Francis-Narendra Modi meeting in Italy, the Congress put out a tweet which said: ‘Finally, the Pope got a chance to meet God!’ Equating PM Modi to Jesus Christ has not gone down well with the Christians. Many respondents said the Congress has no respect for the Pope, as the tweet amounts to ridiculing the religious head.
Commenting on the Congress tweet, Union Minister George Kurian said, “This tweet by the Congress, equates Prime Minister Modi to Lord Jesus. This is absolutely uncalled for and is an insult to the Christian community, who revere Jesus. It is shameful that Congress has stopped to this level.”
State BJP president K Surendran tweeted: “The @INCIndiaKerala “X” handle, seemingly run by radical Islamists or Urban Naxals, continues to post derogatory and humiliating content against nationalistic leaders. Now, it has even stooped to mocking the respected Pope and the Christian community. It’s certain that the AICC General Secretary from Kerala, @kcvenugopalmp, is aware of this. The question is, what are @RahulGandhi and @kharge’s interests in supporting this?
Christian Association and Alliance for Social Action (CASA) has also condemned the tweet which it said has hurt the sentiments of Christians.
In response to the rising criticism, the Congress came out with a statement on X which said the ridicule was directed against PM Modi. The Congress has withdrawn the tweet.
