The Kerala Government Medical Officers Association (KGMOA) today lashed out heavily on Kerala CM Pinarayi Vijayan who recently said that the government is planning to distribute alcohol for those who are suffering withdrawal symptoms upon the prescription of a medical doctor.
Responding to CM’s statement, KGMOA said that it is unscientific to say that the treatment of alcoholism must be using alcohol. “The Chief Minister’s announcement is extremely unfortunate,” said KGMOA. “Modern medicine treats alcoholism with therapies, not using alcohol,” the statement said. The decision to substitute alcohol for an alcoholic is unethical and immoral, KGMOA said.
The chief minister’s response to distribute liquor with the prescription of doctors came after there were a few reports of suicide due to addiction. Kerala has the highest per capita alcohol consumption of any state in India, at over 8 litres per person per year. Earlier, the Kerala government was also exploring the online sale of liquor.
