The panic China-based app TikTok is considering a change in its headquarters, say reports. The mother company of the popular app ByteDance is also considering changing the corporate structure, indicate reports. The decision is following the ban of the app in India and other countries planning to ban it pointing out to the threat to privacy.
Senior executives are discussing options such as creating a new management board for TikTok or establishing a headquarters for the app outside of China to distance the app’s operations from China, the Wall Street Journal reported on Thursday.
“As we consider the best path forward, ByteDance is evaluating changes to the corporate structure of its TikTok business. We remain fully committed to protecting our users’ privacy and security as we build a platform that inspires creativity and brings joy for hundreds of millions of people around the world,” TikTok told ET in a statement.
TikTok added that it will move forward in the best interest of its users, employees, artists, creators, partners, and policymakers.
TikTok was among 59 Chinese apps banned by the govt last month, citing threat to sovereignty, security, and public order. After India banned TikTok last week, Secretary of State Mike Pompeo hinted at a possible ban for TikTok and other Chinese apps during an interview with Fox News.
TikTok has about 200 million registered users in the country. It had been downloaded 660 million times since its launch in India. Parent ByteDance employs about 2000 people in India.
