Kochi DCP Aishwarya Dongre has informed that Kochi is turning into a major hub of drugs. In 2021, Kochi city police have registered 368 drug cases and arrested 406 people under Drug-Free Kochi campaign.
“Kochi is turning to an Indian city where drug abuse is increasing day by day. Observing this, police have initiated strict action to crack down drug abuse,” informed DCP Aishwarya Dongre.
Within three months, Kochi police seized 26.34 kg ganja, 733 LSD stamp, 108 Nitrazepam tablets, 116.59 gm MDMA, 1.34 kg hashish oil, 5 gm hashish and Rs 8,04,500.
Out of 267 complaints received through the Yodhavu app, police took action in over 240 complaints. 15 cases were also registered.
Kochi police carried out raids at 12 places in a joint operation with excise, CISF, RPF, railway police and dog squad to find drugs. Railway stations, bus stands, metro stations, ports and tourist centres were raided.
Drug products were seized four times during the raids.
A drug disposal committee headed by the DCP is being operated to handle the vehicles and drugs seized under narcotic cases. In this year, 4 vehicles which were seized under these cases, were sold out through auction, she added.
