Kerala TP Chandrashekharan’s murder accused loses hand after blast in bomb manufacturing unit; CPI(M) says they have no role in assembling unit

Three persons have been critically injured in a bomb blast in a bomb manufacturing unit in Kannur district of Kerala which is famed for political violence. The incident happened at 1.30 pm on Friday. The explosion took place while making the bomb, said police. One among the injured is the accused in the controversial TP Chandrashekharan’s death case, who has lost one arm completely.

According to the police, the injured are Azhiyur Kallaroth Raneesh, 32, who was an accused in the TP murder case, Sajilesh alias Sajootty, 30, of Kakkara near Kathirur, and Neeraj, 28, of Azhiyur. Both Raneesh and Sajilesh were admitted to Thalassery Cooperative Hospital. Raneesh has serious injuries in his hands.

The spot where the blast took place comes under Kathiroor police station limit. According to witnesses, two people jumped into the nearby river after the explosion. 12 steel bombs were recovered from the spot. Measures to defuse these bombs were taken under police supervision. Food remains were also found in the spot along with bloodstains. Two of the injured were admitted to Thalassery cooperative hospital and one person in AKG hospital in Kannur.

The blast took place while making the bomb, Kannur district police chief Yatheesh Chandra told reporters, however, he denied commenting upon the political links to the incident. Meanwhile, CPI(M) district secretary MV Jayarajan denied any involvement of his party in the bomb blast that happened in the ‘party village’. Just because the injured is a man who is involved in TP Chandrashekharan’s murder case, no one can establish the link of this incident with CPI(M), he said.

51-year-old Chandrasekharan was attacked by assailants on 4 May 2012, who came by a car while he was riding a motorcycle alone while returning after participating in a wedding. Country-made bombs were hurled at him and when he fell off the motorcycle, he was hacked to death with sharp weapons mainly focusing on his face. According to the postmortem report, he received 51 antemortem injuries. His face was badly disfigured due to high number of hacks on the face.
