For the first time in Kerala, the government is setting up a transport company for public transport parallel to the Transport Corporation. The new company will be named ‘K-Swift’. An official announcement in this regard is likely to be made on January 26.
While the ordinary and fast passenger buses will remain under the existing corporation, about 2,000 buses, including long-distance services from superfast to CNG and electric buses, will come under the new company. KSRTC employees will remain under the existing system.
The Finance Department had proposed to set up a sub-corporation under KSRTC for CNG and electric buses to be purchased with KIIFB funding. Swift is the name that MD Biju Prabhakar came up with for that. The Department of Transport has decided that the company is sufficient in view that the new company might suffer like the KSRTC and that the establishment of KURTC for general buses has not been successful.
