Kerala wants to increase the electricity tariff by 10.72 percent of the current rate. The board will today submit a tariff petition including revenue and expenditure up to 2027 and expected losses to State Regulatory Commission.
KSEB is seeking such a rate hike to avoid the current cumulative loss of Rs 8919 crore, which will see an increase of Rs 5135.77 crore by 2027. If approved, the minimum rate will increase from Rs 3.15 to Rs 3.50 per unit for domestic consumers with monthly electricity consumption up to 250 units.
The maximum rate per unit will rise from Rs 7.60 to Rs 8.40. The average power tariff in this category is currently Rs 5.13. The demand is to increase this to Rs 5.68. It is recommended to increase the minimum fare for non-telescopic category customers using more than 250 units per month from Rs 5.8 0 to Rs 6.40, the maximum from Rs 7.90 to Rs 8.70 and the average unit price for this category from Rs 6.86 to Rs 7.56.
According to KSEB, the increase in power consumption is due to non-production and higher purchases from outside. KSEB has said it will spend a total of Rs 28,419.98 crore over the next five years for the overall development of the power sector. The previous hike was on July 8, 2019. That was an increase of 7.52 per cent. The current tariff expires on March 31.
