Minister for Forests K Raju stated that he has sought the permission from the central government to declare wild boars as vermin.
Permission will be sought for destroying wild boars in large numbers owing to the destruction they are causing, he added.
The Forest Department will be able to destroy the animals in large numbers once it is declared as vermin. Although it was instructed to seek the permission regarding this earlier itself, certain conditions had to be followed before filing the application.
The permission will not be granted for the entire state. The details of the areas where the permission must be submitted along with details about the frequency of attacks. Following this, permission will be granted on a cluster basis.
The minister stated that the order to hand over the application along with the details required has been issued. He added that wild boar attacks can be brought under control in the state once the central government grants the permission.
Currently, a lot of regions near forest areas inhabited by people are facing difficulties from wild boar attacks. The Forest department was not able to keep the number of animals under control due to the Wildlife Protection Act, he said.
The government decided to declare them as vermin as its numbers and the frequency of the attacks did not seem to come down. Following this, the state decided to approach the central government for permission, the minister said.
