Kerala recorded 86 new cases of COVID-19 on Tuesday, the highest ever in a day, Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan said in a Facebook post.
One death has been reported in the state taking the total death toll to 11. The deceased was identified as Thiruvananthapuram Nalanchira native Fr. K G Varghese (77). He was undergoing treatment for severe lung ailments.
Among the new cases 15 are from Malappuram district, 10 are from Alappuzha, 9 are from Kasaragod, 8 are from Kollam, 7 are from Thiruvananthapuram (including 1 death), 6 each are from Thrissur, Kottayam and Wayanad, 5 each are from Palakkad, Kozhikode and Kannur, 3 from Ernakulam and 1 from Pathanamthitta district.
Out of the new cases 46 had returned from abroad (Kuwait – 21, UAE – 16, Saudi Arabia – 6, Maldives – 1, Qatar – 1, Oman – 1). 26 had returned from other states (Maharashtra – 9, Tamil Nadu – 7, Karnataka – 5, Delhi – 3, Gujarat – 1, Rajasthan – 1).
More importantly, 12 persons contracted the disease through contact (Wayanad – 6, Malappuram – 4 and 1 each from Kasaragod and Kannur districts). A health worker from Palakkad has also been tested positive.
Meanwhile, 19 persons tested negative. Out of them, 7 each are from Kottayam and Kasaragod, 2 are from Thiruvananthapuram and 1 each from Pathanamthitta, Malappuram and Kannur districts.
So far, Kerala has recorded 1,412 cases out of which 774 are undergoing treatment while 627 have recovered. Meanwhile, 1,47,010 are kept under observation with 1,45,670 in house/institutional quarantine while 1,340 in hospitals. 200 have been newly admitted to hospitals on Tuesday.
