As per the latest reports, as many as 45 child marriages have taken place in Kerala till August this year. These figures are based on complaints and information received by the Child Welfare Department. However, the number could be much more, indicates the report.
The highest number of weddings took place in the thickly Muslim populated Wayanad district during this period. Malappuram, another district with Muslim majority reported a lesser number compared to last year.
Idukki is in second place with three child marriages this year. Two weddings were held in Kottayam and Ernakulam and one in Thrissur. Last year, there were three child marriages in Alappuzha and Thrissur districts. In Idukki, two weddings were held each in Thiruvananthapuram, Ernakulam and Palakkad districts.
From April 2020 to March 2021, out of 145 complaints received by the Child Welfare Committee, 109 marriages were prevented. Most of the complaints were received from Malappuram. No child marriage has been reported in Kozhikode, Kasaragod, Kollam and Pathanamthitta districts for two years.
