Sparking controversy that would keep BJP at stake, Kerala NDA ally BDJS has raised a demand of appointing non-Brahmin as the chief priest in Sabarimala. The Travancore Devaswom Board, however, is of the view that there should be talks on the issue, reports said.
Brahmana Pooja is an accepted practice in Sabarimala which has been following since the beginning of the history of Sabarimala. In this regard, BDJS, has started a campaign ‘Untouchability for Sabarimala Ayyappan?’. So far BJP has not responded to the issue.
Brahmanical Pooja is a ritual performed at Sabarimala. However, BDJS’s demand is to consider others who have learned the rituals for the post. BDJS is a community of members of Ezhavas who are traditionally toddy tappers or liquor businessmen whereas they have appointed their own community members as the priests in the temples they own in Kerala.
