Noted Malayalam film director Ali Akbar has launched an initiative to help the victims of fraudulent conversions and ‘love jihad’ carried out by Islamic extremist groups in Kerala.
Akbar, a Muslim who married a Christian, was the first personality to bring the ‘love jihad’ incident in Kozhikode to the public domain, where an attempt was made by a group of radicalized Muslim youths to abduct a Christian teenager after she refused to convert to Islam. The teenager was first raped after she was given juice mixed with sedatives. Akbar even wrote to the National Commission for Minorities seeking its intervention.
Through a social media post, Akbar reached out to the victims love jihad and offered legal help. Akbar has been in the receiving-end of death threats from radical elements who, in most cases, make calls from overseas. Unfazed, Akbar continues to take up the cases of love jihad.
