An elderly couple in Mundakayam of Kottayam district has been ill-treated by their son. He locked them up in a room while denying them food and medication, reports Mathrubhumi. The father died eventually due to exhaustion and the mother has been admitted to a mental health facility, said reports.
Asambani native Podiyan and his wife are the victims of this cruel treatment from their son. Asambani is located in the interior part of a rural area. The elderly couple have been locked up in a room for several months. Both of them were suffering from physical ailments. They lived with their youngest son, Reji. It is reported that Reji, who is an alcoholic, used to abuse them verbally and physically on a regular basis.
Reji even tied a dog near the couple’s bed in order to prevent others from helping Podiyan and his wife. The neighbours claimed that Reji refused to provide food to his parents even when he fed the dog. Sometimes Reji gave the couple stale food which was more than 3 or 4 days old.
The plight of the couple came out when Asha workers and palliative care workers reached the area on Tuesday. Following this, they conveyed the news to the police department. Later, police took Podiyan to Kanjirappally Taluk Hospital where he died. Podiyan’s wife was taken to Kottayam Medical College as she had mental health issues. The authorities are searching for Reji.
