A new team has been formed to investigate the death of Mofiya Parveen of Aluva. Ernakulam Rural District Crime Branch DySP V Rajeev will lead the team.
Mofiya, a law student, died by suicide on Monday after filing her statement on the domestic abuse case that she filed against her husband and his family. According to her father, she was disturbed by the actions of the then Aluva East CI Sudheer- now transferred to the police headquarters at Thiruvananthapuram.
The police department came under fire over the incident. Sudheer has been accused of misconduct on other occasions as well. An internal investigation against Sudheer, conducted by Aluva DySP P Sivankutty, stated that there were no major lapses on his part in handling the complaint. Sivankutty was in charge of the suicide case.
The Aluva Magistrate’s Court, earlier today, remanded all three accused – Mohammad Suhail (27), his parents Yusaf (63) and Rukhia (55)- and shifted them to Kakkanad district jail.
Meanwhile, the protest organised by Ernakulam DCC in connection with the suicide turned violent after the police used force to evict the protestors who marched towards the Aluva SP office. The police used water cannons and tear gas shells. They blocked the protesters with barricades.
The protesters pelted stones on the police officers too. DCC president Muhammed Shiyas, MP Hibi Eden and other leaders took part in the protest. They alleged that the police is protecting Aluva CI Sudheer despite his alleged involvement in the suicide of Mofiya Parveen.
