Palakkad Koduvayur health inspector Shaji Mathew was caught by the Vigilance and Anti-Corruption Bureau in Kerala for accepting a bribe of Rs. 13,500 from a snack manufacturer. The health inspector was caught red-handed in the staff quarters of Koduvayur Community Health Centre, where he was accepting the bribe money from Ananthakrishnan, the owner of ‘Ambili’ muruk.
Shaji Mathew demanded the bribe money to issue a sanitary certificate without inspecting the production facility to the snack manufacturer. The company was exporting Murukku, a popular snack, to various countries, and required a sanitary certificate for smooth operations. Initially, on March 9, a bribe of Rs. 10,000 was taken, and later, the health inspector demanded an additional amount of Rs. 13,500.
However, Ananthakrishnan, the owner of ‘Ambili’ muruk, alerted the Vigilance and Anti-Corruption Bureau, who conducted a trap operation to catch the health inspector red-handed. The Vigilance team caught Shaji Mathew while he was taking the bribe money.
