A native of Malappuram who invested money in the controversial Thiruvananthapuram gold smuggling was arrested by a special investigation team of Customs nabbed. The officials took him into custody from his residence in the wee hours of Sunday.
The Special Investigation Team of Customs was formed to probe the diplomatic baggage gold smuggling via Thiruvananthapuram airport on Friday.
The SIT will interrogate the man to uncover matters related to his investment in the gold smuggling, other investors, coordination of the smuggling, carriers and involvement of Swapna Suresh and Sandeep Nair in the case.
Though the National Investigation Agency (NIA) is probing the case, Customs is investigating into the case regarding the export of gold by evading tax. NIA has been probing whether the gold smuggling is related to funding terrorist activities in India.
Earlier, on Saturday night, NIA had nabbed Swapna Suresh and Sandeep Nair, the key accused in the case from Bengaluru. As per reports both the accused will be brought to Cochin today.
