The state government has decided to avail bottled drinking water at Rs 13 per litre in order to bring packaged water under the ambit of the Essential Commodities Act with a view to regulate its price.
Food and Civil Supplies Minister P Thilothaman told PTI that many complaints have been receiving from the public about its excessive price. The government thus wanted to regulate the price of the bottled water.
The government had considered to bring down the price to Rs 11-12 two years ago, but could not implement due to protests from large scale bottled water manufacturers and traders, said the Minister.
The minister said now the price cut was possible as bottled water has been made an essential commodity. At present, bottled water costs Rs 20 per litre.
