As the fight between DGP Jacob Thomas and Kerala CM Pinarayi Vijayan continues, the government demoted Mr. Thomas as ADGP. The action is justified as the DGP ‘violated service rules by writing a book.
After Pinarayi Vijayan-led government came to power, Jacob Thomas was appointed as vigilance director and it led to a difference in opinions. The decision to demote Jacob Thomas came when the argument between the government and Jacob Thomas reached its final stage.
As per explanations, the decision to demote him was on the basis of the departmental investigation report. Writing a book without permission is a rule violation, it is said in the notice. The fight between Jacob Thomas and government started after the Ockhi disaster. Following this, he published a book titled ‘Sravukalkoppam Neenthumbol’ (While Swimming with Sharks)which led to the disciplinary action.
At present, Jacob Thomas is the senior-most IPS officer in service. He belongs to the 1985 batch of civil service officials. He was appointed in the metal and steel industry recently and Jacob Thomas criticised the government against the decision. This also led to further action.
A senior IPS officer is demoted for the first time. The government took the action when Jacob Thomas was to retire on May 31 this year. Mr. Jacob Thomas has expressed his support to RSS and the BJP led governments publically too.
