In a bid to appease the Mulsim community in the state, Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan is likely to induct another Muslim minister into his cabinet before the upcoming Lok Sabha elections in Kerala, said sources. Iravipuram MLA, Naushad, known for his proximity to the Islamist outfit Social Democratic Party of India (SDPI), is said to be the frontrunner. SDPI is the political wing of the outlawed Popular Front of India.
According to reports, Naushad’s potential appointment is aimed at grabbing the support of ultra Islamists and a section of Muslims. The party hopes that through this it would be able to garner Muslim support especially in Southern Kerala. Muslims in Northern Kerala have been traditionally supporters of the Muslim League which is a part of UDF.
In addition to the cabinet expansion, Minister KN Balagopal and Shailaja, who are currently serving as legislators, are speculated to be fielded as candidates for the Lok Sabha elections from Kollam and Kannur, respectively. As part of this political maneuvering, Balagopal will step down from his ministerial position to focus on his campaign in the Lok Sabha constituency, said sources.
As the cabinet reshuffle takes place, P. Rajeev is expected to assume the role of Finance Minister, while Riaz is anticipated to be appointed as the Industries Minister.
