The Intelligence is gearing up for a detailed probe into the incident of gold seizure from Thiruvananthapuram airport in the form of diplomatic consignment addressed to UAE Consulate in Kerala. It will look into all the diplomatic baggage that arrived to the consulate till date. Apart from revenue intelligence, Intelligence Bureau is also probing on the incident.
As per the statement of Sarith, the former PRO of UAE consulate who was arrested in the case, gold was smuggled since 2019 through the diplomatic channel. As per information, gold worth over Rs 100 crore has been smuggled. Baggage addressed to the consulate was frequent at the airport. Till date only one has been inspected and 30.25 kg of gold seized.
The Intelligence will fist verify the baggage that arrived to the consulate officially. Once it is verified, the other baggage can be identified easily.
Meanwhile, it is known that baggages sent to UAE also was through the diplomatic channel. Black money transfer is suspected in these deals.
A gang including Keralites in UAE is suspected to be behind the smuggling.
Apart from UAE consulate, Maldives consulate also functions in the state. However, frequent baggage arrive only at UAE consulate. If black money deal is involved apart from gold smuggling, the probe may change its course to national security threat.
