The Indian team bagged one gold and five bronze medals in the International Mathematical Olympiad 2022 held in Oslo, Norway, from July 6-16.
Pranjal Srivastava of Bengaluru won the gold medal, while Atul Shatavart Nadig and Kaustav Mishra, also of Bengaluru, Arjun Gupta of Delhi, Adhitya Venkata Ganesh Mangudy of Pune, and Vedant Saini of Chandigarh won the bronze.
With this year’s medal, Pranjal Srivastava has scored a hat trick. He is the first Indian to win three gold medals at the IMO. In his debut year, 2018, at the age of 14, he won a silver medal and went on to win gold medals in 2019, 2021, and 2022. In 2020, India could not participate in the IMO due to the COVID pandemic. He has also won two Gold medals in the Asian Pacific Mathematical Olympiad (2019, 2022).
The team had won a total score of 165 out of a maximum possible score of 252. In all, 589 contestants (521 Males, 68 Females) participated in IMO 2022.
The Indian team was led by Prof. Niranjan Balachandran (Department of Mathematics, Indian Institute of Technology, Bombay) (Leader), Prof. Shanta Laishram (Theoretical Statistics and Mathematics Unit, Indian Statistical Institute, Delhi) (Deputy Leader), Mr. Sutanay Bhattacharya (Observer A) and Mr. Spandan Ghosh (Observer B). Mr.Bhattacharya will join the Ph.D programme in Mathematics at the University of California, San Diego, in Fall 2022. Mr. Ghosh is pursuing a B.S in Mathematics at the Indian Institute of Science, Bengaluru. Both of them are IMO medalists.(India Science Wire)
