Hyderabad was gripped by shock and horror as the police arrested a 48-year-old male stock trader in connection with the murder of his lady tenant. The gruesome crime bore a chilling resemblance to the infamous Shraddha Walkar case, as the accused allegedly went to great lengths to conceal evidence. The arrest of B Chandra Mohan on Wednesday has shed light on the disturbing details surrounding the murder of his tenant, Y Anuradha Reddy, aged 55.
According to the police, the accused committed the heinous act on May 12, stabbing Reddy to death. To eradicate any trace of the crime, Mohan proceeded to dismember her body using stone cutting machines, dividing it into six pieces. The legs and hands were stored in the victim’s refrigerator, while the remaining body parts were concealed inside a suitcase within the house.
On May 15, the accused discarded the decapitated head of Anuradha Reddy in a black polythene bag near a garbage dump close to the Musi river. Mohan had allegedly planned to dispose of the remaining body parts gradually.
Anuradha Reddy had been a tenant residing on the ground floor of a house owned by Chandra Mohan, as confirmed by Deputy Commissioner of Police (South East Zone) Ch Rupesh. The shocking discovery of the decapitated head by local civic workers on May 17 prompted them to alert the police, leading to the subsequent investigation.
To crack the case, the police formed eight teams and meticulously analyzed CCTV footage from the area. Through this diligent effort, the authorities were able to identify and apprehend the accused. DCP Rupesh explained that the investigation involved scrutinizing the CCTV footage along the route where the severed head was discovered. After narrowing down their suspects, the police interrogated Chandra Mohan, ultimately leading to his confession of the crime.
The motive behind the murder, as revealed by the police, stemmed from a financial dispute between the accused and the victim. Mohan owed Reddy a substantial amount of Rs 7 lakhs. The official further disclosed that the accused had been in a long-standing relationship with the deceased, who used to lend money to acquaintances on an interest basis. Despite repeated requests, Mohan failed to repay the borrowed amount, which led to escalating tensions and ultimately the fatal act.
On May 12, a quarrel erupted between Mohan and Reddy over the outstanding debt, resulting in a violent confrontation. The accused allegedly attacked her with a knife, causing fatal stab wounds to her chest and stomach. Following the murder, Mohan researched online for methods to dispose of the body, ultimately resorting to decapitation and dismemberment.
To mask the odor, the accused used phenyl, incense sticks, and perfume spray bottles on the severed body parts. Additionally, he used Reddy’s cellphone to send messages to her close contacts, creating the illusion that she was still alive and residing elsewhere.
The shocking case bears similarities to the Shraddha Walkar murder, where the prime accused had also dismembered the victim’s body before disposing of the parts in various locations. Aftab Amin Poonawala, the main suspect in the Walkar case, was arrested in November 2022.
