Maha Shivratri is an important festival that is celebrated annually to honor Lord Shiva. It is believed that on this day, Lord Shiva performed the Tandava, the cosmic dance of creation, preservation, and destruction. The festival is marked by fasting, offering prayers, and observing certain rituals. However, there are certain things that are considered inauspicious and are not supposed to be done on Shivratri. Let’s take a look at some of them.

Eating non-vegetarian food

One of the most important things to avoid on Shivratri is non-vegetarian food. Many people observe a strict fast on this day, and even those who do not, abstain from eating meat, fish, and eggs as it is believed that consuming non-vegetarian food on this day can bring bad luck.

Consuming alcohol

Drinking alcohol is another thing that is considered inauspicious on Shivratri. As the festival is associated with spirituality and devotion, it is believed that alcohol consumption can lead to negative energies and bad luck.

Eating garlic and onions

Some people also avoid eating garlic and onions on Shivratri. It is believed that these foods can generate excessive heat in the body, which can interfere with the spiritual practices and meditation that are commonly performed on this day.

Sleeping during the day

It is recommended that people stay awake and alert during the night on Shivratri, as this is believed to be a time of great spiritual power. It is also believed that sleeping during the day can bring bad luck.

Performing Abhishek with coconut water

While performing the Abhishek, a ritual that involves pouring milk, water, honey, or other sacred substances on the Shiva Lingam, it is recommended to avoid using coconut water. It is believed that coconut water can attract negative energies and bring bad luck.

Maha Shivratri is an important festival in Hinduism that is observed with great devotion and spirituality. While there are certain things that are not recommended to be done on this day, it is ultimately up to the individual to decide how they wish to celebrate and observe the festival. It is important to remember that the essence of the festival lies in the devotion and love towards Lord Shiva, and to keep the spirit of the festival alive in our hearts.
