Record temperature was registered in four districts in Kerala yesterday, giving the impression that Kerala is moving towards extreme heat. The highest temperatures were recorded in Kollam (38.7 degrees), Palakkad (37.6), Kottayam (36.6) and Thrissur (38.4) districts.
The Met Office has warned that the temperature will rise to 2-3 degrees in the coming days. In the next few days, it may rise to 42 degrees in Palakkad, Kottayam and Kollam.
This would be the third hottest season in the last 10 years. There is a possibility of light rain on intermittent days next week but it will not be enough to reduce the heat. 360 mm of rainfall is expected this summer. Last year witnessed extra rain at this time of the year.
As wells and wetlands begin to dry up, the state is heading for a drinking water shortage. There is a risk of sunburn if exposed to hot sun. The risk of summer diseases is also high. Diseases including chickenpox and diarrhea can also be a challenge. The getting infected by Covid should take special care.
