Though the state is in the midst of lockdown restrictions on the Kovid background, illegal activities continue to be out of control. In the last 24 hours alone, authorities have seized gold worth 15 cores, 1.5 cores worth cannabis and crores of illegal money during operations in various parts of the state.
A massive gold hunt was held at Thiruvananthapuram International Airport yesterday. Gold worth Rs 15 crore was seized. The gold was hidden in a parcel to the UAE Consulate. Customs officials said the gold smuggling in diplomatic baggage was the first in the country. The gold arrived at the address of the UAE Consulate in Thiruvananthapuram three days ago. It was the largest gold haul in state history. The gold was stored inside steel pipes in the diplomatic cargo at the consulate’s address. The two men were identified by the investigating team. Sarith is in the custody of the investigating team. It is reported that Suresh Suresh is absconding.
Meanwhile the Excise Enforcement Team seized one million worth of hashish oil and Rs 50 lakh worth of cannabis. The smuggled cannabis from found in a national permit lorry in Pothencode. The arrested were Eldo Abraham from Perumbavoor and Sebin from Kundara, Kollam. State Excise Enforcement Squad CIT Anikumar said the chief conspirator had intensified his search for a native of Perumbavoor.
The police have also seized a one-and-a-half-crore illegal money in a vehicle inspection exercise. It money was hidden in a pickup vehicle that was carrying fruits reportedly to Cochin. Salam and Moideen, residents of Aluva, were taken into custody in connection with the incident.
