The installation of the historic sceptre of the Chola Empire in the new Parliament has sparked a contentious debate between the central government and the DMK party. While the central government views the sceptre as a symbol of sovereignty, the DMK has expressed reservations, calling it a representation of monarchy rather than democracy.
TKS Ilangovan, a prominent leader of the DMK, voiced his concerns regarding the installation of the sceptre, emphasizing that it does not align with the principles of Tamil pride. He argued that the authority to bestow the mace lies with the Math (monastic institution) rather than political parties.
Ilangovan further contended that the Math itself is a symbol of the monarchy, asserting that it had only presented the sceptre to India during its struggle for independence. However, the significance of the sceptre extends beyond political implications, encompassing Tamil tradition and culture. The DMK, however, denies this connection.
It is worth noting that the DMK has been actively promoting Tamil culture and identity in its political agenda. Hence, the party’s dismissal of the Chola sceptre installation appears to be driven by political motives and a perceived antagonism towards the central government.
