The Andhra Pradesh Disaster Management Authority today said that 34 bodies have been retrieved so far, 13 people are still missing and 26 people have been rescued in the Godavri river incident. The boat run by the Andhra Pradesh Tourism Development Corporation was reportedly carrying 61 people including 11 crew members.
The rescue operations were carried out jointly by Indian Navy, NDRF and Police Teams. As per reports no safety measures were followed while conducting the tour package. Chief Minister Y.S. Jagan Mohan Reddy directed the East Godavari district Collector to conduct a probe into the tragedy. The Chief Minister has announced 10 lakh rupees ex-gratia each to the families of the deceased.
President Ram Nath Kovind, Vice President M Venkaiah Naidu and Prime Minister Narendra Modi have expressed grief over the loss of lives due to the boat capsize. Modi said on Twitter that he was “extremely pained” by the tragedy. “My thoughts are with the bereaved families.” Rescue operations are continuing, reports said.
